When to Use Spellbook's Legal Sources

Legal Sources in Ask is a strategic feature in Spellbook that allows users to ask legal questions and receive AI-generated answers grounded in trusted, jurisdiction-specific legal sources like CanLII and EDGAR.

By selecting a country and its associated legal sources via a dropdown in Spellbook Ask, you can ensure citations link to real, verifiable statutes or cases

Examples of questions to use in Spellbook's Ask feature that include legal research:

  • This contract contains a non-compete provision. Is this enforceable in Canada?

  • Is this DPA in line with the requirements of GDPR?

  • Party X is trying to enforce the force majeure provision of this contract. How would this provision hold up in Michigan?

  • What is the test to determine whether someone is an independent contractor? given the provisions of this contract, would this person classify as an independent contractor?

  • The lawyer for the buyer says that one sided indemnity is unconscionable under Polish law. Is this correct or is he pulling my leg?

How to Do Research with Spellbook's Legal Sources

1. Go to the Ask tab in Spellbook, and click on "Legal Sources"

2. Under each country listed, you can expand the selection to select which source you'd like Spellbook to pull information from.

3. In the textbox, enter in your prompt, then click the arrow key.

4. Spellbook will provide the legal sources that it has searched through, as well as an answer for you down below. You can click into each legal source to read them in more detail, if needed.

5. There will also be citations within the answer, which will indicate the specific source this information was gathered from. Hover over or click on them to see more information.

We’re starting with well-known public legal databases like CanLII (Canada), AustLII (Australia), and similar reputable sources by jurisdiction. New sources will be added based on user requirements.

Will the AI also search the general web when I have legal sources selected?

No. Selecting legal sources ensures that Spellbook’s AI focuses only on these legal sources, as opposed to the general web.
