Overview

With iManage integration, you can securely select documents from your firm’s iManage system and use them as reference material in Spellbook. Spellbook respects your existing iManage access permissions (including ethical walls), so you will only see and use documents you already have permission to access in iManage.

You can use iManage documents to:

  • Ask questions based on one or more documents

  • Review and summarize agreements

  • Compare contracts and extract key clauses

  • Ground drafting in your firm’s real document context

Before you start

  • You’ll need an iManage account.

  • Your firm may need to enable Spellbook in iManage Control Center before you can connect. If you don’t see the iManage option or the connection fails, contact your iManage administrator.

Connect Spellbook to iManage

You only need to do this once per account.

  1. In Spellbook, open a place where you can add attachments (see the next section).

  2. Choose Add from iManage (or Import from iManage, depending on the product surface).

  3. Follow the prompts to sign in to iManage and authorize access.

Add iManage documents to Spellbook

You can add iManage files from both the Word add-in and Associate.

Word add-in (Ask)

  1. Open Ask in the Spellbook Word add-in.

  2. Select the Attachments (paperclip) icon.

  3. Choose Import from iManage.

  4. Select one or more documents.

The selected documents are added to your Ask context, and you can reference them like any other attachment.

Associate (Ask)

  1. Open Ask in Associate.

  2. Select the Attachments (paperclip) icon.

  3. Choose Add from iManage.

  4. Select one or more documents.

The selected documents are added to your Ask context and can be used in answers and analysis.

Associate (Projects)

  1. Open the relevant Project in Associate.

  2. In the Files area, select the option to add files.

  3. Choose Add from iManage.

  4. Select one or more documents.

The selected documents are added to the project and can be used throughout your workflows.

Tips for best results

  • Add the most relevant documents to keep results focused and accurate.

  • If you’re comparing documents, attach both documents in the same request and specify what you want compared (e.g., termination, liability, change of control).

  • If you receive a permissions error, confirm you can access the document directly in iManage.

Example prompts

  • “Summarize the key risks in these agreements.”

  • “Compare these two contracts and highlight differences in termination and liability.”

  • “Answer this due diligence question using the attached iManage documents.”

  • “Extract all change-of-control provisions across these documents.”

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need to download or re-upload documents?

No. Documents are accessed directly from iManage. You select what you need, and Spellbook uses it as reference material.

  • Can I attach multiple iManage documents at once?

Yes. You can attach multiple documents in a single Ask request or add multiple documents to an Associate project.

  • Are iManage permissions and ethical walls respected?

Yes. Spellbook respects iManage access permissions. You can only access documents you have permission to view in iManage.

  • Does Spellbook sync my iManage library or folders automatically?

No. In the current integration, you manually select the documents you want to use each time.

  • Does Spellbook store a copy of my iManage documents?

Spellbook fetches documents as needed to answer your request. It does not create a persistent library sync of your iManage repository.

  • I don’t see “Add from iManage.” What should I do?

First, confirm your firm has enabled Spellbook for iManage. If the option still doesn’t appear, contact your firm’s iManage administrator or Spellbook support.
